What is Ridge Preservation?

Also known as ridge augmentation, ridge preservation is a procedure that can help limit bone loss after tooth loss or extraction. When there is an empty socket where a tooth was extracted, bone loss can happen quickly, causing a change in your bite and smile. Using ridge preservation, we can restore and maintain a natural-looking smile and give you a solid foundation for a future dental implant. If ridge preservation is the right path for you, our team will walk you through the procedure and address your questions and concerns.

Benefits of Ridge Preservation

A ridge preservation provides our patients who are missing teeth with a number of benefits, both for their smile and for their overall oral health.

  • Prevents and reverses effects of bone loss
  • Maintains shape of ridge for an aesthetic smile
  • Provides secure foundation for future restorations
  • Preserves a beautiful smile

The Ridge Preservation Procedure

The process begins with a consultation. During this appointment, our team will help you determine if ridge preservation is necessary for you and whether its purpose will be to enhance the aesthetics of your smile or prepare you for an implant restoration.

During your procedure appointment, we will place bone grafting material into the empty space. We will ensure that the ridge looks and feels natural and functions as expected. Once the bone graft is in place, we use sutures to close up the gums and allow them to begin to heal.

Recovery from Ridge Preservation

We are often using ridge preservation to create space for a dental implant. In this case, we need to give the new bone graft enough time to properly heal and be a secure base for the implant. The average healing time after a ridge preservation procedure is three to six months. Your healing time will depend on a number of factors—including the size of the bone graft, your general health, and your body’s healing abilities. We will bring you in for check-ups after the procedure and can give you an estimated timeline of your recovery and the next phases of your smile restoration.

By using a ridge preservation procedure, the team at Sean P. Avera, DDS, MS, is able to restore your mouth to a more natural look and feel. Even when you have bone loss caused by missing teeth, we can reconstruct the natural shape of your gums and jaw to ensure that your smile looks and functions as it should.
